David Sobie, Co-founder and CEO of Happy Returns, a UPS company: David has served as Happy Returns CEO since he co-founded the company in 2015. Today, Happy Returns is the largest consolidated returns network in the U.S., offering box-free, label-free returns and innovative fraud prevention services.
We recently announced UPS and Happy Returns, a UPS Company, are expanding our Return Bar network to 10,000 locations around the U.S. – adding more than 1,700 new sites through UPS Authorized Shipping Outlets, like Annex Brands and PackageHub Business Centers.
With this expansion, we’re giving shoppers more places to return items without a box or label, while helping retailers reduce fraud and get inventory back faster.
We talked to Happy Returns Co-founder and CEO David Sobie to learn why this news is a big deal for shoppers, our customers and UPS:
How do the Return Bar locations complement UPS’s end-to-end network and the core of what we offer to customers?
Return Bar locations are the front door to our end-to-end reverse logistics network.
They’re where we consolidate returns. Instead of millions of separate packages moving through the network, box-free, label-free items are verified at drop-off, grouped together and routed through our hubs before going back to retailers in bulk. That model allows us to fully leverage the UPS network.
What does the expansion mean for UPS?
As we add more Return Bar locations, returns enter the UPS network in a more structured, predictable way.
The expansion helps strengthen UPS’s place in e-commerce by giving customers a better way to handle one of the challenging parts of the shopping experience.
This is driving more volume, more efficiency and a stronger network overall. Together, UPS and Happy Returns now operate the largest box-free, label-free return network in the U.S., giving customers greater convenience and access.
How do UPS and Happy Returns stack up against the competition?
This expansion builds on our already robust network, giving consumers more choice than ever before.
Our network is more than three times the size of the next-largest alternative. With box-free, label-free returns and QR codes you can add right to your phone’s digital wallet, we provide an easier and smoother return experience.
For fraud prevention, we use Return Vision – our AI-powered tool that flags risky returns to be audited before refunds are issued. We’re giving retailers more control and protection than ever before.
For operational efficiency, it’s really all about speed. By consolidating packages and leveraging UPS’s world-class infrastructure, returns can get from drop-off and back to retailers in as little as 3.6 days, with an average of about seven days.
We don’t just have a bigger network; we have a better one for shoppers, retailers and UPS.
When you take a step back, what has really made this expansion possible?
UPS brings unmatched scale, operational discipline and a world-class network. Happy Returns brings an innovative approach to returns, along with the technology and processes to make it real.
What’s been powerful is how those strengths have come together. Teams across UPS have all been moving in the same direction.
This expansion is not one big moment – it’s thousands of decisions made well over time. That’s how you get to 10,000 Return Bar locations, and more importantly, that’s how you build something that continues to get better from here.
