All of us at UPS join you in mourning the loss of Cal Darden Sr. I had the privilege of knowing Cal and appreciated his leadership, friendship and the role he played in the lives and careers of countless UPSers.
Over his 33 years of service, Cal rose to senior vice president of U.S. Operations – the second Black leader on our executive team – and to our board of directors through an unwavering commitment to delivering excellence and investing in our people.
While a career can be measured by titles and accomplishments, a life is better measured by the impact it has on others. By both standards, Cal's legacy is extraordinary.
Known as a gentle giant with a passion for doing things the right way, Cal drove service improvements across our operations by holding UPSers to exceptionally high standards while always making them feel valued and supported. He combined strength and kindness, accountability and compassion, achievement and humility.
Many UPS leaders speak of Cal not only as a trailblazer and mentor, but as someone who changed the way they saw our company and their potential within it. From the front lines to the boardroom, he opened doors that ensured opportunity was within reach for anyone who earned it. Because of him, more people saw a path to advancement and a place where they belonged.
Cal’s recognition in lists like Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Black Executives was both well-earned and unsurprising. He made a difference far beyond UPS, and particularly in our hometown of Atlanta.
His contributions to the National Urban League, 100 Black Men of North Metro Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Foundation, the United Way and his church were further proof of his commitment to building up those around him.
I hope your family finds comfort in knowing how deeply Cal was respected, admired and loved. His example continues to inspire generations of UPSers, and his legacy remains an enduring part of who we are through the leaders he developed, the opportunities he created and the culture he shaped.
