What’s new: UPS Healthcare announced a major investment across two facilities in Italy – adding 100,000 square meters of warehouse space in Passo Corese near Rome and Somaglia in Lodi. Combined, the renovations represent a huge boost to our ability to provide premium service for our customers.
Here’s a look at how we’re improving these facilities with a €55 million investment:
- The Passo Corese and Somaglia facilities both compliant with good distribution practices and good manufacturing practices, making the warehouses safe for medical and pharmaceutical products.
- Passo Corese comes complete with the latest automation technology. More than 80 robots, capable of climbing 12-meter shelves (that’s nearly 40 feet!), can autonomously pick and sort up to 25,000 crates.
- And the Somaglia hub can offer critical temperature-controlled environments from as low as -20°C, serving Italy’s growing pharmaceutical market.
So, what’s the big picture? Robotics, automated picking systems and tracking tech play a much-needed role in simplifying order fulfillment, reducing errors and increasing efficiency.
Both facilities are designed to the latest sustainability building standards and have heating and cooling systems powered by on-site solar panels.
“These new facilities extend our cold chain capabilities and sustainable end-to-end solutions to support our customers, now and in the future,” said Felipe Morgulis, president of UPS Healthcare, Europe and LATAM. “Most importantly, we can give patients peace of mind knowing that their critical healthcare treatments and devices are in safe hands.”
Global growth: UPS Healthcare’s global network of healthcare-compliant distribution space topped 1.6 million square meters in 2023, more than doubling warehouse space compared to 2020.
By making improvements to our customer experience, we’re on our way to establishing UPS as the #1 complex healthcare logistics provider and premium logistics orchestrator in the world.
