Supply chain flex: When demand for 90-year-old wholesale gift brand Manual Woodworkers & Weavers (MWW) started growing, the team knew they needed to broaden their operations. So, they expanded to Tijuana, Mexico to be closer to their main market, the western U.S. After this move, MWW began searching for a premium logistics provider that could meet time-in-transit guarantees and help with exporting to the U.S.

Enter UPS. MWW easily expanded with the help of our cross-border logistics expertise.

A freight idea: The game changer for MWW was UPS Trade Direct Cross Border. The solution simply works like this:

  1. Freight or individual packages are consolidated into one shipment. In this case, it happens in Mexico.
  2. After the shipment crosses the border, it’s cleared through customs “as one” shipment – speeding up this process.
  3. Once in the U.S., shipments are deconsolidated and packages are inserted directly into the UPS delivery network. Because there's no need for an MWW distribution center, costs and time are saved.

“UPS is an essential logistics partner for our northbound shipments," said Luis Paez, General Manager of West Coast Operations, MWW. “Especially because of the rigorous standards required for cross-border ones.”

UPS also helps MWW bundle shipments for a smooth customs process and even performs daily pickups at the Tijuana facilities — meaning packages reach their destination faster.

The big picture: According to the Wall Street Journal, about 20% of manufacturing exports have moved to countries like Mexico, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Poland. The changing and dynamic global market affects all companies, supply chains, carriers, and modes of logistics and distribution. This is where we stand out. Because of our end-to-end service, customers only need to rely on one logistics partner – UPS.
