In his 50s, Frank Luscher chose to leave decades of experience in manufacturing and test engineering behind to become a delivery driver at UPS. And he’s glad he did

Following a move to Austin, Texas, Frank joined UPS part-time during the holiday peak season to earn some extra money. After discovering our industry-leading pay and benefits, he quickly decided to make driving his full-time career.

“UPS is paying drivers the equivalent to what some senior engineers in my old field were making,” Frank said. “How many jobs can you start with no experience and earn the same salary as other fields that require years of experience plus a degree?”

Industry leading play: New delivery drivers start at $23 per hour and reach the top pay rate after four years of gaining experience and skills. In 2028, drivers at top pay rate can expect to make about $49 per hour and earn approximately, $170,000 annually in pay and benefits. Full-time and most part-time employees also have access to generous UPS healthcare benefits and pension plans.

Even though he was entering a brand-new field, Frank said adjusting to life on the road came naturally. “I like vigorous activity,” he shared. “Plus, I really love being outdoors.”

From the desk to open roads: One of the best parts of being on the road according to Frank is the opportunity to connect with the customers he sees every day, as well as spending some time with plenty of new four-legged friends.

“The dogs on my routes know my truck as the treat wagon,” said Frank. “One of my stops even has a few camels and zebras.”

Frank may not have the earliest career start at UPS, but for him opportunity arrived right on time

"I've made everything from industrial coatings to gourmet ice cream,” said Frank as he reflects on his career journey. “But UPS is my best adventure yet! I love this job!
