Special Olympics coach builds lasting career in a specialist role with UPS

Meet Robert: A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Robert decided to join UPS in 2019 as a seasonal helper and discovered what the opportunity truly offered.

‘I suddensly realised, ‘Hey, I quite like this!’” Robert said of his first experience delivering during the peak Christmas season. ‘I like the freedom that the job presents and making people happy when they see the brown truck roll up. I was like, ‘This is great.’

In only a few years, Robert was promoted to an on-road specialist role. His favourite part? The variety of experiences and responsibilities.

‘I get to do a lot of different things’, Robert said. ‘It is safety, service and performance all day, every day.’

‘I more than doubled my salary in the last four years. I am in a really good place financially for myself and my family.’

Working full-time, Robert balances his life outside of UPS and has served as a Special Olympics golf coach for over 13 years. He is married with two children and is optimistic about his future with UPS. And he is not alone – about 40% of administrative assistants and specialists in operations have been with UPS for 10 or more years.

‘You can do whatever you want to do at UPS, whether it is sorting parcels, driving, managing, anything. If you want to become a manager or a division manager or above, you can do it, and UPS will help you in any way that they possibly can.’

We asked Robert one last question: Why should customers have faith in UPS’ service and reliability?

‘Because our people care – from our parcel handlers to our supervisors, to our drivers. You have people that care about you and your parcels, and there is no reason to go with anyone else.’
