UPS begins a six-month test in the 2eme arrondissement to help address urban mobility challenges

UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced that it has begun testing deliveries with an eBike in central Paris. The test is being done in collaboration with the City of Paris, the arrondissement administration and Urban Lab, the urban laboratory of Paris&Co, and is part of a wider program in Paris to test innovative approaches to help combat the issues arising from urban logistics.

The six-month test began in April and will see UPS delivering packages with two eBikes in the 2eme arrondissement from a trailer parked in a specially-marked spaced reserved for the duration of the test. The trailer full of packages for delivery will be transported every morning from UPS’s Paris hub in Charenton, and will be returned to the hub every evening with packages that have been picked up throughout the day.

“Using an eBike in the center of Paris will make UPS deliveries more efficient, both in terms of operational cost as well as environmental impact,” said Edouard Barreiro, director of public affairs, UPS West Europe. “UPS sees itself as part of the solution to urban congestion and continues to work as a partner in reducing the environmental impact of package delivery in crowded city centers worldwide.”

"Consumer behavior is changing and cities are seeing increasing numbers of large commercial vehicles, which can cause congestion and pollution. These changes also need to make us reconsider the use of traditional loading and unloading zones. To support businesses in the pursuit of more sustainable delivery solutions, the City of Paris is making its neighborhoods available for testing. After evaluating new solutions tested under real conditions, which is essential for measuring benefits and scalability, we will consider the regulatory changes needed for wider deployment,” said Christophe Najdovski, deputy mayor of Paris responsible for transport, roads, and public space.

The eBikes are equipped with battery-powered electric motors that make it possible to cover longer distances than traditional bicycles, carry substantial loads and navigate hills and other terrain. Maximum energy efficiency is achieved when combining battery power and human power simultaneously. UPS will evaluate the reliability, design, integration in the city’s infrastructure and acceptance of the vehicle throughout the test period. The results of the test will also be shared with the City of Paris, which will study the environmental benefits of eBike deliveries.

"It was important to run this experiment in a dense urban neighborhood, where the challenges facing logistics companies are similar to what they face in other urban centers. The results of the test will be all the more relevant,” said Elise Batkin, program manager, sustainable urbans logistics, Urban Lab.

UPS has numerous cycle solutions deployed around the world. The company currently operates inner-city delivery projects with delivery on foot and by bike in the German cities of Frankfurt, Offenbach, Hamburg, Munich, Oldenburg and Herne, as well as in Leuven, Belgium; Rome and Verona, Italy; Toulouse, France; Vienna, Austria; London; and Dublin, Ireland. Most recently eBikes have debuted in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pa., and, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Using its “Rolling Laboratory” approach, UPS deploys approximately 9,100 low-emission vehicles to determine what works best in each situation. From pedal power and electric-assisted bicycles in dense urban areas like London and Hamburg to electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the U.S., and natural gas, renewable natural gas and propane globally, UPS puts sustainability innovation into action, all over the world.

UPS has set a bold target to reduce our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 12% across our global ground operations by 2025. To reach this target, we have set three additional goals: 25% of our total electricity is to come from renewable sources by 2025; alternative fuels will supply 40% of our total ground fuel needs by 2025; and 25% of total vehicles purchased annually will be alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles by 2020.
