UPS Japan Employees Unite For 17th Annual Global Volunteer Month

UPS (NYSE:UPS) employees from across Japan came together in support of a wide range of community projects this October as part of UPS’s annual Global Volunteer Month.

Now in its 17th year, Global Volunteer Month mobilizes UPS employees and their families around the world to dedicate their time to volunteering in the communities in which the company operates. This year the UPS Japan team volunteered over 560 hours as the company closes in on its 2014 goal of contributing 20 million volunteer hours by the end of 2020.

“October is one of the most popular times of year for many UPS employees across the world, as it gives us the opportunity to go out and connect with the people and communities we proudly serve every day,” said Daryl Tay, President of UPS Japan.

“The organizations that we support do fantastic work for these people and communities, and to see so many UPS Japan employees and their families getting involved in such a wide range of causes across the country makes me extremely proud. We’re looking forward to building on this work and these partnerships in the years to come as we look towards building a more sustainable future.”

As part of this year’s volunteer efforts, UPS employees in Japan participated in a range of initiatives that aim to have a positive impact on the lives of people in the community:

  • Cooperated with environmental protection organizations Umi Wo Tsukuru Kai, JEAN and Zushi Beach Club to clean Zushi Beach and Nojima Park in Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo.
  • Participated in the “Pink Ribbon Smile Walk 2019”, sponsored by Japan Cancer Society, to raise public awareness of the importance of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
  • Donated 70 children's books to a mobile library launched by Umi to Yama no Kodomo Toshokan, a children’s library in Hayama-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, this year. UPS last year donated 25,000 U.S. dollars to set up the pop-up library.
  • Donated hand-made cloths, dust-cloths and disposable bins to be used at facilities operated by Family House, a non-profit organization which supports children suffering from cancer and other incurable diseases and their families. The organization provides safe accommodations for those in treatment at hospitals in large cities away from their hometowns.
  • Participated in sports, arts and music activities at Kodomo no Sato, Kodomo no Ie (Catholic Osaka Archdiocese), a non-profit organization that offers financial, educational and mental care to children in difficult circumstances.

In addition to the UPS Japan team’s volunteer efforts as part of Global Volunteer Month 2019, The UPS Foundation, the company’s global philanthropic and corporate citizenship arm, donated to the following organizations.

  • In cooperation with the Lifestyle Research Institute of Forests, joined Hibiya Gardening Show as event supporters and volunteer translators for foreign tourists. Also donated $43,000 to Hachioji Satoyama Re-creation Project.
  • Donated $46,000 for forest conservation activities organized by Tondabayashi No Shizen Wo Mamoru Kai, which maintains observation roads in satoyama landscapes and bamboo forests in urbanized area in Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture.

In addition to the efforts by the UPS Japan team, employees from UPS locations across the world also engaged in community outreach activities in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa.
