“We began participating in UPS’s carbon neutral shipping program before we even had a sustainability team in place,” said Danielle Jezienicki, director of sustainability at Grove Collaborative, a Certified B corporation that offers sustainable and non-toxic products for home and personal care.

For customers like Grove that are concerned about the impact of shipping on the environment, UPS offers a carbon neutral shipping program.

UPS manages everything from calculating the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to purchasing and retiring the carbon offsets. They also partner with third-party verification and certification organizations to help validate the service's credibility.

Businesses can reduce their carbon footprint by contributing to projects like Wolf Creek, which captures methane landfill emissions to generate electricity in Georgia, USA, or, Chol Charoen, which captures emissions released from wastewater to produce electricity in Thailand.

“I would encourage any small business owner curious about starting this journey, or even struggling to create a meaningful sustainability program, to take the next step,” Danielle said. “Our experience in setting up a carbon neutral program with UPS was so easy that you really have to question why every retailer doesn’t take the same immediate action.”

Nespresso has participated in UPS’s carbon neutral shipping program for several years.

“Both logistics and transportation play a large role in supporting our ongoing sustainability efforts,” said Kika Buhrmann, vice president of business to business at Nespresso. “Participating in UPS carbon neutral shipping further expands our reduction efforts beyond our operations to the indirect emissions that result from transportation.”

Working toward its ultimate ambition of recycling all Nespresso capsules, the company encourages consumers and businesses to recycle.

“We could not make recycling easy and accessible if it weren’t for our valued partnership with UPS, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate for years to come,” Kika said.
